I love to play with colors. They have so many potentials and such an interesting subject. My major in college is technical communication, which means I write instruction such as : how to install TV. Graphic design is also part of my major. My previous jobs are all about graphic design. I realized that the thing that interests me the most is color matching. From outfit styling, to makeup, they are all closely related to color choices.
As far as guideline? I wish I could summarize everything in one article but I can't. Especially, there is no strict guideline. each individual is unique. Same as how to choose your personal style, you have to know yourself first when it comes to choosing makeup colors.
But there is one rule that I can tell you, which is COORDINATION. Having a balanced look will make you look elegant no matter what color you use. So when it comes to choosing the right colors, you really need to take consideration of the occasions you are going to attend, your underskin tone color, your eye color, eye shape, lip shape and face shape.
1. When choosing eye shadow colors, try to choose the complimentary color of your eyes (contrasting colors). It will help your eyes pop. For example, if you have blue eyes, burgundy, orange, gold eye shadows will make your eyes really pop. However if you have dark brown eyes, go for deep colors that will highlight your eyes, such as deep brown, deep plum or navy blue. Your should avoid pastel colors such as light pink. They will make you look washed out. You should also try eyeshadows that contain metallics, like gold, silver, copper, or bronze, to add some light to your dark eyes
you also have to take your eye shape into consideration. if your eyes are already popped, try to avoid applying metallic eyeshadow in huge area.
2. When choosing lipstick colors, you really have to know your underskin tone first. It is easy. Pull your sleeve up, look at your vein under the sunlight. If the veins on your wrist appear blue, you are cool toned. If the veins on your wrist appear yellow, green, you are warm toned. If your veins appear blue and green, you are neutral toned, so you can wear both cool and warm tones.
Here is a color wheel.
From runway to Tv ads, we all know that purple is the trendy color next year. I personally love purple, but as far as wearing it, i am not quite sure. i am warm undertone color, and skin color is medium, i know that violet color especially blue violet will not work on me. maybe a bag but thats it. For makeups, I would like to try mauve pinks or maybe mauves and add some warm brown into it.
i know that the best way to find out which color works best for me is not reading 10 books about colors, its about trying it out myself. It is the same as finding your personal style. You can't just find it within a day. it takes time to learn, to try. The more you see, the more you think, the more you will learn. No one can tell you what fits you best but yourself. because at the end of the day, if you are happy and confident, you are the most beautiful woman.
